Organic Wakame Sea Vegetable

Spiral Foods

Wakame is the most popular Japanese sea vegetable. Harvested from the ocean floor, then washed and naturally sun dried.

The regular addition of sea vegetables to your diet not only adds an extra dimension of flavour, texture, and colour to your food, but also a “warehouse of nutrition” rarely found in land vegetables.

Most commercial salt-soaked Wakame and seaweeds undergo a boiling process; as a result, its nutritional value and its characteristic flavour are diminished. Our Wakame from Japan on the other hand, is dried naturally under the sun; therefore, it retains more of its nutritional value as well as its original, fresh Wakame flavour.

WHERE THEY GROW

While Hijiki and Wakame grow within the intertidal zone. Arame grows about 5-10 meters deep in the warm Sea of Ise. Kombu grows 6-15 meters long in the cold, clean ocean around Hokkaido Island, in the northern part of Japan.

Ingredients: Organic wakame (Undaria pinnatifida).

PREPARATION & USE

Soak Wakame in cool water for 10-15 minutes. (Note: Wakame will expand 10-15 times.) Drain and add to favourite soups or other dishes. To soften Wakame for use in salad, immerse quickly in boiling water, then drain.

  • Soaked pieces can be used as a base for seafood cocktails instead of lettuce.
  • Miso Soup or other soups: Add soaked 3-4cm (1″-2″) pieces.
  • Topping: Toasted Wakame can be crumbled and sprinkled as a savory condiment on any dish.
  • Wakame can also be added to your favourite salad vegetables for a truly tasty delight.
  • Mix soaked Wakame and thinly sliced cucumber with brown rice vinegar for a delicious Japanese-style salad.
