Oranges – Cara Cara (Red Flesh Navel)
Doraville Organics NASAA#2409 - Moorland (Near Taree), NSW
Cara Cara oranges have a vibrant pink flesh, and are lower in acid and extra sweet compared to a Navel.
They are a natural mutation of the seedless navel orange, and were first found in Cara Cara, Venezuela. These oranges have gained popularity in California for their exceptionally sweet juice and low acid content. They're highly seasonal and are a special winter delight, peaking in sweetness in May and June.
Often confused with blood oranges, Cara Caras are different. While blood oranges get their pigment from anthocyanin, Cara Caras owe their unique salmon-pink hue to lycopenes. Enjoy this distinctive and flavourful citrus treat!
